My field of study is European medieval history, with special emphasis on the transition of culture and education between the tenth and twelfth centuries. My first book on the subject, A World Made by Men: Cognition and Society 400-1200, was published in 1985. Since then, I have written and co-written books on a variety of subjects, all dealing with the scholars and their activities in the central Middle Ages. My current project will pull these various threads together with a comparative study of the emergence in Paris and Bologna of the universities on which institutions of higher education would be modeled throughout western Europe.
