Lessons From the Chilean Social Revolt: A Conversation with Pablo Abufom

February 19 @ 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm

Dr. Edward Murphy, a Chilean expert, will interview Pablo Abufom, a scholar and activist deeply involved in the protest movement, about the course of the uprising and how it fits into broader global trends.

In October 2019, Chilean protestors took part in massive demonstrations that epitomized much of the energy that has sustained protest across the globe in the recent past. The protests linked anti-neoliberal and anti-authoritarian causes with those dedicated to social justice in race, environmental, indigenous, labor, gender, and sex relations. For a time, the protests were highly successful, propelling Gabriel Boric, a young social democrat, into the presidency. The social and political environment has lost momentum, however, as reactionary forces are now ascendent.
