Brooks Winfree is a scholar of slavery and Native American history. His book project, Black in
Native Texas: Slavery and Settler Colonialism, 1821–1865, uses labor, family, violence, and
resistance as frameworks to reorient scholarly understanding of slavery in Texas.
He received a Ph.D. in United States history from the University of Texas at Austin in 2021.
At MSU he teaches a variety of courses on subjects including United States History to 1876, the
United States West, Indigenous history, and labor history.
Currently, Brooks Winfree serves as the faculty advisor for the History Club, an undergraduate
student-run organization for history majors.
