Responsible and Ethical Conduct of Research (RECR)

Responsible and Ethical Conduct of Research (RECR) is required for all graduate students at Michigan State University. The specific requirements for History graduate students are:

  • Year 1: take 4 online CITI training modules, which are due by the end of a student’s first year.
  • Year 2: take 3 of the 6 possible RECR Basic Modules on CITI.
  • Year 3 and beyond: take 3 hours of annual refresher training, which can be done by completing CITI modules, attending Graduate School workshops, attending History Department RECR workshops, or one-on-one discussions with one’s advisor.
  • In addition, a minimum of 6 hours of face-to-face, discussion-based workshops need to be completed within the first two years, and all training must be up to date before completing comp exams. Please see the list of ways to complete this requirement on the Graduate School’s RECR training website
