Why Major in History?

Where historical thinking takes shape

All courses in history have the goal of helping you learn how to think and write historically in a critical manner. History courses emphasize learning how to identify viewpoints, gather and organize information, present conclusions in essays and on the internet, distinguish facts from interpretations, recognize historical relationships and patterns, and appreciate the relevance of historical insight to the understanding of current events and problems.

Studying in the History Department not only allows you to learn about global history from some of the world’s leading experts but also enables you to develop many of the important “soft skills” that are in high demand by many employers.

For future teachers, our History: Social Studies Education major sets the standard for developing K–12 educators who bring history to life and foster informed, engaged citizens.
