Associate Professor Thomas Summerhill receives 2026 #iTeachMSU Educator Award

Thomas Summerhill, associate professor of history, has been recognized with a 2026 #iTeachMSU Educator Award, an honor that celebrates Michigan State educators who make a meaningful impact on teaching, learning, and student success across campus.

Known for his commitment to student learning, Dr. Summerhill brings history to life through courses examining the broader social and political forces shaping 19th century America. His teaching emphasizes critical thinking, engagement with original historical sources, digital history and mentorship through research projects, including senior honors theses.

The iTeachMSU Educator Award is part of the Center for Teaching and Learning Innovation’s Thank an Educator initiative, which invites students, colleagues, and community members to recognize educators whose work has shaped their MSU experience.

“There is no greater honor than to be nominated by students for this award,” said Dr. Summerhill. “My courses are challenging for students. I do my best to reward their effort by providing a supportive learning environment, one in which students develop research and analytical skills they can apply beyond the history classroom. I am delighted that students value that experience so much.”

Dr. Summerhill will be recognized at a ceremony on May 7.
