I am a First Year PhD student at Michigan State University studying U.S. history with a focus on the Chicano experience. My faculty advisor/dissertation committee chair is Dr. Delia Fernandez. My minor fields of study will be African American History and Native American Studies, while also working towards a certificate in Chicano Studies. My dissertation research focuses on the creation of Mexican Colonias in Michigan between the first and second world wars. More specifically, I am interested in the community building that took place in those years as migrant workers from south Texas created permanent settlements in Michigan alongside newly arrived Black families from the south, European immigrants, and the state’s Indigenous population. Through my own family’s makeup I know that all of these populations shared space and substantively altered the cultural landscape of Michigan. It is my hope to write a truly integrated history of this period while centering the experiences and amplifying the voices of those peoples who have been historically marginalized in mainstream U.S. history. I also aim to complicate the existing understanding of Mexican/Mexican-American history in Michigan by moving beyond the traditional lenses of agricultural and industrial labor to include an analysis that considers race, sex, gender, class, sexual orientation and gender expression, and examples of cultural expression.

I began my studies at the University of Michigan, Flint where I completed a BA in Communications with a dual focus in Public Relations and Media Studies, as well as a BA in History. I also hold an MA from Central Michigan University in History. In 2018 I received an Erasmus fellowship to study abroad at the Ruhr Universität Bochum in Bochum, Germany. I have previously worked as a TA for U.S. History, 1865-Present at Central Michigan University, and will serve as a TA for IAH 203, Latin America and the World in Fall 2020 with Dr. Erin Graham.

On a personal note I consider myself a taco connoisseur, a Dragon enthusiast, and a Nutella super fan. I believe that James Baldwin is the greatest writer that the United States has ever produced, and Prince is the greatest musician of all time. I am also a huge fan of Real Madrid C.F.

Last, but most certainly not least: Black Lives Matter. Las Vidas Negras Importan. Be the antiracist change you wish to see in the world!
