Cora Walby

Cora is pursuing a MA degree in Public History, along with a graduate certificate in Digital Humanities to better prepare her for a career in museum collection care and management. While working as an administrative assistant in the College of Engineering at MSU, she completed the Museum Studies Certificate in 2016. She has taken classes at the International Preservation Studies Center, and more recently at Beloit College to gain the hands on experience needed to work with various collections. While working towards her MA, she is doing a research project on early American artificial lighting utilizing the Beisman and Votruba Collections of the MSU Museum. This research will be formed into an online exhibit for others to learn how lighting materials, habits and ideas have changed with industrialization. Additionally, she is working with the Michigan History Center to research and develop material for an upcoming exhibit addition to the Iron Industry Museum in Negaunee, Michigan

Cora is a member of the Michigan Museum Alliance and Michigan Emerging Museum Professionals. She has interned at the MSU museum (inventory and database updating), volunteered at the Michigan Historical Center (digitizing records) and at the Detroit Institute of Arts (digitizing video collections).

Because of her interest in material culture, she hopes to help connect people with the rich knowledge contained in museum collections, while also preserving the objects for future study.
