Susan Stein-Roggenbuck

Professor Stein-Roggenbuck teaches courses in first-year writing, immigration and race, reproductive justice, and American social policy, primarily in James Madison College. Her research focuses on the history of American social policy, health care and aged Americans. She has published two monographs, “Caring for Mom and Dad: Parent Dependency Policies and American Social Policy” (Cambridge University Press, 2023) and “Negotiating Relief: The Development of Social Welfare Programs in Depression-Era Michigan, 1930-1940,” (Ohio State University Press, 2008). She has published articles in the Bulletin of the History of Medicine, Social Service Review, and the Journal of Policy History.

Her current project analyzes the transformation of Michigan’s poorhouses into health care institutions in the twentieth century. She is the Faculty Excellence Advocate for James Madison College. She was a fellow in the inaugural Walter and Pauline Adams Academy for Instructional Excellence and Innovation in 2008-2009 and was a recipient of the American Association for University Women Dissertation Fellowship.
