Before arriving at MSU in fall 2025, I taught at Grand Valley State University from 2008 to 2025. I teach classes in U.S. History, African American History, Civil Rights, and Sports History, and my research specialty is the Black Athlete. I have published three books, I Fight for a Living: Boxing and the Battle for Black Manhood, 1880-1915 (2017,) We Will Win the DayThe Civil Rights Movement, the Black Athlete, and the Quest for Equality (2021,) and my latest book is The Great Black Hope: Doug Williams, Vince Evans and the Making of the Black Quarterback (2024.) In addition, I have two audible lectures for The Great Courses; African American Athletes Who Made History and A Pastime of Their Own: The Story of Negro League Baseball. I am also the co-host of The Black Athlete podcast. Currently, I am working on a book project studying the decline of the African American baseball superstar.

When I am not reading, researching, writing, or thinking about history, I spend most of my time with my family; I especially enjoy teaching my kids the finer points of how to play proper basketball. I collect junk wax and vinyl, and I love shopping at Costco.
