Brooks Winfree is a scholar of slavery and Native American history. His book project, Black in Native Texas: Slavery and Settler Colonialism, 1821–1865, uses labor, family, violence, and resistance as frameworks to reorient scholarly understanding of slavery in Texas. He received a Ph.D. in United States history from the University of Texas at Austin in 2021.

At MSU, he teaches a variety of courses on subjects including United States History to 1876, the United States West, Indigenous history, and labor history.
