Maxwell Benneh is a PhD student at Michigan State University (MSU). He pursued his undergraduate studies at the University of Education, Winneba, Ghana, earning a bachelor’s degree in History Education and serving as a department teaching assistant. He later enrolled in a master’s program at the University of Ghana, focusing on African History. His master’s thesis, titled “The Evolution of Professional Football in Ghana up to 2004”, traced the antecedent of professional football in Ghana from the nineteenth century to the twentieth century. It talks about how the government redirected the growth of football to professional football in the 1993/1994 season.
Maxwell is currently under the supervision of Professor Peter Alegi, History Department, MSU. His doctoral research seeks to analyze how Kwame Nkrumah employed sports to promote nationalism and unify the diverse ethnic groups within Ghana and Africa. This research explores the intersection of politics, culture, and sports.
