Left of Black host Mark Anthony Neal (Duke University) asks black feminist historians Jessica Marie Johnson (Michigan State University) and Treva B. Lindsey (Ohio State University) to name their must-read books for Black History Month. Books referenced include Stephanie M. H. Camp’s Closer to Freedom: Enslaved Women and Everyday Resistance in the Antebellum South (2004) and Tiffany Gill’s Beauty Shop Politics: African American Women’s Activism in the Beauty Industry (2010). Johnson and Lindsey are the co-authors of the recent essay “Searching for Climax: Black Erotic Lives in Slavery and Freedom” in Meridians (November 2014).
