addressed the needs of aging parents who could no longer work and lacked financial security.

Susan Stein-Roggenbuck is Professor in the James Madison College and Adjunct Professor in the Department of History at MSU. She teaches first-year writing and courses in immigration, gender politics, and social policy. She is the author of Negotiating Relief: The Development of Social Welfare in Depression-Era Michigan, 1930-1940 and
Caring for Mom and Dad: Parent Dependency and American Social Policy. She also has published articles in the
Bulletin of the History of Medicine, Journal of Social Policy, and Social Service Review.
