Dr. Nwando Achebe, Professor of History and Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the College of Social Science, along with other MSU colleagues, were recently awarded The Neuner Award for Excellence in Professional Scholarly Publication for their collaborative work on a scholarly article. This is an award given to authors judged to have written the overall finest article in the Journal of Higher Education Management.
Achebe coauthored “Creating Sustainable University Structures for Offices of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI)” with Carole Gibbs, Associate Professor of Criminal Justice and Acting Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion for the College of Social Science, Brian G. Johnson, Assistant Dean for Diversity, Equity and inclusion in James Madison College, Daniel Velez-Ortiz, Associate Professor of Social Work, and graduate student Chioma Nwaiche.
In addition to that award, Achebe was unanimously selected by the executive board of the New York African Studies Association (NYASA) as the recipient of the 2022 Distinguished Africanist Award for her prolific and innovative scholarship in the field of Africana Studies as well as her leadership as the founding editor of the Journal of West African History (JWAH) The Distinguished Africanist Award will be presented to Achebe at the 2023 NYASA Conference in June.
