The BBC World Service’s documentary “Beyond the Pitch” recently featured department alumnus Dr. Hikabwa Chipande (PhD, 2015). BBC sport journalist Farayi Mungazi interviewed Dr. Chipande at the Zambian archives in Lusaka, where they spoke about the relationship between soccer and politics during Kenneth Kaunda’s presidency (1964-1991).
The excellent 50-minute radio documentary explores the close links between the “beautiful game” of football and the “dirty game” of politics in multiple African countries. It aired on the eve of the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon, on the 60th anniversary of the continent’s most prestigious sporting event.
