Daniel Feldbaum is a historian of medieval Japan focusing on maritime, economic and food history as it relates to estates (shōen). His research involves studying the extant primary source documents related to an island estate in the Seto Inland Sea to determine how non-agricultural estates differed from agricultural estates as well as how rent products functioned both as economic goods and food. He began this research as a part of his master’s thesis at Kyushu University in Fukuoka, Japan.
