The University of California Press is pleased to announce that Christina Schwenkel, associate professor of anthropology at the University of California-Riverside, and Charles Keith, associate professor of history at Michigan State University, have been appointed as co-editors of the Journal of Vietnamese Studies. Both have served on the editorial board for several years and have published their research in the journal.
Professor Schwenkel’s research focuses broadly on transnationalism, historical memory, visual culture, and urban planning in Vietnam. Her current book project examines postwar reconstruction of urban infrastructure and technology transfers between Vietnam and the former East Germany.
Professor Keith’s research focuses on the history of nineteenth and twentieth century Vietnam. His current book project explores the experiences of migrations from the former Indochina to France during the colonial era, and the influence of these migrations for colonial and postcolonial societies in mainland Southeast Asia.
UC Press and Professors Schwenkel and Keith extend their gratitude to outgoing co-editors Liam Kelley and Peter Zinoman and acknowledge their extraordinary contributions to the journal. Both have served in the position since 2015, with Professor Zinoman also serving as editor from 2006 until 2012.
Professors Schwenkel and Keith are looking forward to taking up their new positions as the field of Vietnamese studies continues to grow globally. They hope to continue to expand relationships with scholars around the world studying Vietnam across time and space, including those engaged with the transnational study of Vietnam’s historically diverse diasporas. The editors also hope to make the journal more interactive and multi-media, while building stronger connections to artists, filmmakers, photographers, and other scholars and practitioners of the visual arts.
Professors Schwenkel and Keith look forward to receiving manuscript submissions from scholars across disciplines, including from scholars writing in languages other than English. Submissions should be made via ScholarOne: https://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/ucpress-jvs. For any other questions not addressed in any of the JVS guidelines, please contact the Production Editor at jvsproduction@berkeley.edu%20.
