Peter M. Beattie will give a key note address to the ANPAD (Associação Nacional de Pós-Graduação e Pesquisa em Administração) Congress in Rio de Janeiro: “Gerenciando trabalhadores sentenciados: A fazenda da colônia penal de Fernando de Noronha e trabalho coercivo no Brasil imperial” [Managing Convict Laborers: The State Farm of Fernando de Noronha Island and Coercive Labor in Imperial Brazil (1822-1889)]. Critical business administration studies have taken a historical turn and are now recognizing the roots of modern labor management lay in part in the history of slavery and the proto-industrial organization of plantations in the Americas. My forthcoming book on convict labor on Fernando de Noronha uses this extremely well-documented state farm to illuminate parallels between the labor management strategies of penal colony authorities, slaveowners, and military officers whose enlisted men were mostly coerced to perform national service. The ANPAD Congress meeting takes place from Sept. 14-17, 2014.
