Associate Professor of History Dr. Charles Keith has recently published his second book, Subjects and Sojourners: A History of Indochinese in France. In it, Dr. Keith explores how French colonialism extended Indochina’s colonial society into France, where Indochinese subjects studied, labored, fought, and lived in imperial spaces and contexts that were profoundly different from the culture they had left behind. His book shows how time in France transformed these sojourners, who in turn transformed colonial society when they returned to Indochina.
Subjects and Sojourners provides a vivid and thorough social, cultural, and political history of the Indochinese population in France. Read it here.
