Abdoulie Jabang will be spending nine months in the Gambia and two months in the United Kingdom, working on his dissertation project titled “Reproducing Environmental Inequalities: Geographies of Power and Production in the Gambia, c. 1860 to 1980.” The project explores the differential effects of environmental control and change on both powerful and marginalized groups, highlighting the various ways that people have creatively adapted to and resisted environmental change and injustice. His project involves research at many Gambian archives as well as extensive interviews with peasant farmers, rural elite cattle ranchers, and rice growers in oldest communities situated along the lower and middle reaches of the Gambia River.
