Teacher Education

Major

History majors who wish to become secondary school teachers must be admitted to the College of Education and will need to fulfill the requirements of the Teacher Education program as well as the requirements for the B.A. in History. A minor in History is also available to students pursuing a career in Teacher Education. Program requirements can be found at the Department of Teacher Education website.

The Center for History Teaching is currently working to develop introductory seminars (HST 201) for preservice teachers. Other courses are also in development that address history education and teaching techniques, including an online course on teaching World History.

M.A. II

The Department of History offers a Masters degree specifically oriented to high school social studies teachers in the mid-Michigan region. Students in the M.A. II program attend graduate-level history courses with Department of History Ph.D students in the late afternoon and evenings. The program requires thirty credits, and M.A. II students are allowed to schedule courses at their own pace (generally one per semester). Graduate course work in other departments at MSU and some transfer credits from other Michigan campuses can count toward the completion of the degree.
