The History Department is proud to announce that Liz Timbs, a PhD student in African history, has been awarded a prestigious Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad Fellowship.
Starting in early 2016, Liz will spend 11 months conducting research in South Africa on “Manipulations of Masculinity: Gendering Zuluness from Shaka to the Age of HIV/AIDS.” Liz’s dissertation, supervised by Peter Alegi, will explore the history of male circumcision in KwaZulu-Natal and its implications for Zulu cultural identity, masculinity, and contemporary public health policy.
In South Africa, Liz will mine archival sources and conduct oral history interviews in Durban, Pietermaritzburg, Johannesburg, and Pretoria. She will be based at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg campus, where she will be affiliated with the Sinomlando Centre for Oral History and Memory Work.
