HST 372 – History of the Middle East

Dome of the RockTaught by: Dr. Alan Fisher – The importance of the Middle East for Europe, Africa, and Asia will be the overarching theme of HST 372. A survey of the history of the Middle East from the era of Muhammad (7th century c.e.) to Napoleon (late 18th century c.e.). The course will emphasize social and economic history, including the importance of trade across Eurasia. The rise and fall of rich and powerful empires will be examined: the Abbasid Arab Empire, the Ottoman Turkish Empire, the Safavid Iranian Empire, and the Mughal Indian Empire.
