Changes in sport

“I think that they have changed in many ways. Back when I was young there was less media and business behind sports. I feel that today players are playing more for a paycheck and fame. When I was young I think that sports players cared extra hard and competed harder. In today’s world sports are filled with sponsors, money, and big contracts. Also, I don’t think that it is right for players to get paid as much as they do. I don’t see how one person can be paid millions of dollars for playing a game. I love sports for what it is, not the money” (JB)

“Integration is the biggest change blacks and whites can somewhat get along today when I was growing up that wasn’t the case. The black kids played at black high schools against black schools while the white schools had their own district where they only played each other” (JJ)

“On the contrary to what people believe, football hasn’t changed very much.  Players still catch the ball, block the player in front of them, make the tackle and carry the ball.  The basics and fundamentals have not changed from what I learned as a young child in Canton, Ohio” (HB)

_______________

“People don’t stress the fundamentals anymore, athleticism is what most look for now and the skill level has dropped.  But, I will say it is more competitive now because kids view sports as a way to escape their circumstances” (QC)

“The rules of different sports have changed. Watching a basketball game now is nothing like it used to be. I have given up on the NBA. I stopped watching it when it became more about entertainment and less about technical skill” (SF)
