Departmental Awards for Graduate Students
These awards are given out at the end of every spring semester. All current graduate students in the Department of History are invited to submit their applications for consideration
Don Lammers Graduate Award
- This award is designed for a History graduate student in good
standing whose research interests and related activities promise to improve
our knowledge and historical understanding of the nature and dynamics of
international and intercultural relationships in any geographical region

Fred Williams Graduate Award
- This award is designed to recognize teaching assistants who plan
a teaching career in History (with preference given to the teaching of
American history) at the college or university level as exemplified by
Professor Williams during his tenure at Michigan State University. - For consideration: Please submit a letter indicating your interest in the award, a sample

Muelder-Lowe Graduate Award
- This award is designed to recognize assistants who plan a teaching

Harry Brown Graduate Fellowship in American History
- This award is awarded to a student who demonstrates academic excellence.

Jeff Rooney Paper Prize
- This award is given to a graduate student who writes the best paper in a seminar in the year of the award.

Dr. Kwan-Wai So Memorial Scholarship Fund in HST
- This award is given to a graduate student who is in good standing with the department, has an exemplary record, and recognized by the Department as an effective and motivational teacher with a focus or concentration in Asian History.
Irene Steindler Endowment in HST
- This award is given to a graduate student who promotes diversity, programs or activities related to the Department’s participation in or collaboration with the University‘s Jewish Studies Program; increasing visibility of the Department to the public (visiting lectureships, webcasts, podcasts, etc.) faculty research and travel, and graduate research.
James Waltz Fellowship in HST
- This award is for the recruitment of new graduate students with demonstrated financial need as determined by the Fed. Government for study in HST at MSU. Preference shall be given to applicants with a focus or concentration in European (esp. pre-1789) History.
