Two events are lined up so far for the History Spring Speaker Series:
Robert Vinson will give a talk titled “From The Wilmington Massacre to the Zulu Promised Land: Rev. Charles Morris & Black Liberation in The United States and South Africa, c. 1900” on March 20, 2014 from 3-5pm in 255 Old Horticulture
Christina Sharpe’s (Tufts University) will give a talk titled, “The Trans-Atlantic: How a Girl Becomes a Ship.” Sharpe’s talk will introduce work from her forthcoming book In the Wake: On Blackness and Being. Central to In the Wake are questions of antiblackness, the longue durée of Atlantic chattel slavery, and the ongoing effects of Black Being in the aftermath of slavery. Her talk is on March 27, 2014 from 3-5pm in 115 International Center.
Sharpe’s talk is also the Center for Gender in a Global Context’s Women’s History Month Event and is co-sponsored by the GenCen and the Queering Slavery Working Group.
The Queering Slavery Working Group is also sponsoring a lunchtime conversation “What Does it Mean to Queer Slavery?” Please join Christina Sharpe, Omise’eke Tinsley (via Google Hangout), Vanessa Holden, and Jessica Marie Johnson in a conversation on queering the black Atlantic.
